The appellations of Sauternes and Barsac was ranked with the greatest number of crus and the only superior one, premier cru supérieur.
1939 : The Sauternes and Barsac appellations are among the first to be registered as French origin-controlled appellations, Appellations d’Origine Contrôlées. The authorities thus recognized the inimitable specificity of the terroir, the constancy of know-how as well as the strength of the collective identity of the territory.
